What to do if the NAS drives become full and can't access the data:

  1. Power off the NAS and remove all HDDs

  2. Boot the NAS up without any drives inside

  3. After the second long beep is heard, the NAS should be found by QNAP Finder

  4. Download and run PuTTY (

  5. Enter the NAS IP to connect and login with the user and password “admin”

  6. Hot-plug all the HDDs back into the NAS (leave the NAS powered up)

  7. Run the commands below via the PuTTY console:

    • config_util 1

    • storage_boot_init 1

    • storage_boot_init 2

    • cd /share/MD0_DATA
      (for single disk volume use /share/HDA_DATA)

  1. You should now be inside your RAID data volume. Use the commands below to navigate to and delete some unwanted files (a few 100Mb should be sufficient)

    • ll - list the contents of a directory

    • cd directory_name - move into the directory directory_name

    • rm filename - delete the file filename

NOTE: if you are unsure at any point please contact QNAP support to perform the procedure. The rm command will delete files permanently so be careful when using it!

  1. After you have deleted unwanted files, reboot the NAS by typing reboot

  1. The NAS should be accessible as usual after reboot. Please update to the latest firmware to prevent the hard-drive full bug from re-occurring.
